Popular south Indian film star Sujatha passed away on Wednesday, April 6 morning at her residence here. in Chennai. The 58-year-old actress was reportedly suffering from severe health problems over the past few months. The exact cause of death is not immediately known.
Sujatha was born in Sri Lanka on December 10, 1952 and grew up in Kerala. She acted in more than 300 films including Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam and Hindi languages for more than 4 decades. She started her film career at the age of 14 through a Malayalam film ‘Tabaswini’ and later K Balachander introduced her to Kollywood through ‘Aval Oru Thodar Kathai’ in 1974. The same film was remade in Telugu as ‘Antuleni Katha’ featuring Jayapradha as lead actress.
She won the hearts of Kannada audience with her inspiring performance in 'Tutta Mutta'. In 'Nanna Devaru', she played the lead role opposite Anant Nag. During the later years, she acted in mother's roles. Among her maternal roles, the best remembered are as Ramesh Aravind's mother in 'Tutta Mutta' and Ravichandran's mother in 'Neelakantha'.
She has starred with top actors in Tamil cinema including Kamal Haasan and has also done several movies in Malayam, Telugu and Hindi. The veteran actress made her debut in Hidi with 'Do Kaliyaan' in 1968.
Besides with Kamal Haasan, she acted with almost all top heroes of yesteryear like Sr NTR, ANR, Sobhan Babu, Krishna, Murali Mohan, Mohan Babu, Krishnam Raju, Chiranjeevi, Rajanikanth, Kamal Haasan and the like.
Because of health reasons, Sujatha had stopped taking up acting offers for a few years now.
